Universal Modder for Claude Code: Setup & First Mod
Claude Code (Anthropic's terminal-based coding agent) is the most battle-tested host for Universal Modder. The plugin marketplace install makes it a one-liner, and Claude's strength at long-context reasoning, tool use, and cautious code generation lines up well with the recon → reverse-engineer → build → test loop.
Why Claude Code Is the Most Popular Host
- Native plugin marketplace — Universal Modder is installed as a first-class plugin, not a manual prompt.
- Strong tool-use loop — Claude Code reliably chains shell commands, MCP tools and file edits across dozens of steps without losing the thread.
- Long context window — fits entire decompiled assemblies plus playbooks plus field notes in one session.
- Cautious about destructive actions — aligns with Universal Modder's guardrails around saves and anti-cheat.
Prerequisites
- A Claude Code subscription (Pro or Max) with terminal access.
- Python 3.10+ and
ffmpegon PATH. - A game you own, installed on Steam, Epic, or Xbox PC.
- Optionally a fal.ai API key (for cloud asset generation) — otherwise Universal Modder falls back to a local ComfyUI server.
Install Step by Step
1. Add the Universal Modder plugin marketplace
Inside Claude Code, run:
/plugin marketplace add rehan-remade/universal-modder
This pulls the marketplace metadata from the official GitHub repo.
2. Install the plugin
/plugin install universal-modder@universal-modder
Claude Code will install all 10 skills, register the um CLI wrapper, and configure the fal MCP server.
3. Set your fal API key (optional but recommended)
export FAL_KEY="your-fal-key-here"
Without this, Claude can still mod but will use local ComfyUI for image generation, which is slower and needs a beefy GPU.
4. Verify the install
um scan
You should see a list of detected Steam/Epic/Xbox games with engine fingerprints. If um isn't on PATH, restart your terminal or run uv tool install universal-modder.
Your First Prompt
Once installed, open Claude Code in an empty working directory and describe the mod you want in plain language. Claude will read the mod-any-game skill, look up field notes, and start the loop automatically.
You: I own Terraria on Steam. Add a homing missile launcher weapon
and a tactical nuke with a mushroom cloud. Generate all sprites
through fal, test it in-game, and cut a showcase video.
Claude:
→ Runs `um scan` to find Terraria install
→ Reads the .NET/XNA + tModLoader playbook
→ Searches knowledge base for prior Terraria field notes
→ Backs up save folder with `um backup`
→ Decompiles Terraria.dll with ILSpy over MCP
→ Generates weapon sprites + explosion frames via fal
→ Builds a tModLoader mod
→ Launches Terraria, verifies the nuke crater renders
→ Cuts a titled showcase video with ffmpeg
→ Writes a field note and offers to open a PR
Skills That Load Inside Claude Code
mod-any-game— the whole loop, hard safety rules, 12 engine playbooks.game-recon— prior field notes, engine/version, anti-cheat, loaders, save folders.reverse-engineering— ILSpy, Cpp2IL, Vineflower, Ghidra, IDA, Frida, RenderDoc over MCP.fal-assets— sprites, textures, PBR, image-to-3D, rigging, SFX, music, voice.
Common Claude Code Pitfalls
- Anti-cheat games — Claude will refuse to mod online games with anti-cheat. That's by design; don't try to override it.
- Long sessions — if Claude gets lost halfway through, tell it "re-read MODDING_PLAN.md and continue from step N". It will re-sync without restarting.
- fal rate limits — if you're generating lots of sprites, watch your fal dashboard. Claude can batch generations to stay under rate limits.
Claude vs Other Agents for Modding
Claude Code is currently the most reliable host, but other agents are catching up. See our comparison of Claude Code vs Codex vs Gemini CLI vs Cursor for modding workflows.
