Gemini CLI for Universal Modder: The Free, Long-Context Option
Gemini CLI is Google's open-source terminal AI agent, powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro / Gemini 3.1. It ships with a 1-million-token context window, a generous free tier (roughly 60 requests per minute, 1,000 per day), and reads the same AGENTS.md that Universal Modder uses.
Why Use Gemini CLI for Modding?
- 1M-token context — fit an entire decompiled game assembly plus playbooks plus field notes in one session. This matters for large games like Skyrim, GTA V, or Unity titles with huge codebases.
- Free tier — no subscription required to start. Good if you're trying Universal Modder before paying for Claude or ChatGPT.
- Open source (Apache 2.0) — you can read, fork, or self-host it.
- Built-in tools + MCP — same shell access, file tools, and MCP server support that Universal Modder needs.
Installing Gemini CLI
# Quick start (no install)
npx @google/gemini-cli
# Or install globally
npm install -g @google/gemini-cli
gemini
On first run it will authenticate with your Google account. The free tier uses your Gemini API quota; paid plans unlock higher limits.
Running Universal Modder with Gemini CLI
Universal Modder doesn't require a special Gemini plugin install — it works through the AGENTS.md bootstrap:
git clone https://github.com/rehan-remade/universal-modder.git
cd universal-modder
gemini
Once inside Gemini CLI, point it at your game and describe the mod. It will read AGENTS.md, load the mod-any-game skill, and start the loop.
What to Expect vs Claude Code
| Gemini CLI | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| Context window | 1M tokens | 200k tokens |
| Cost | Free tier available | Pro/Max subscription |
| Long-loop reliability | Good, occasionally needs nudging | Highest |
| Decompiled code reading | Strong (long context helps) | Strong |
| Plugin marketplace | AGENTS.md bootstrap | Native plugin install |
Tip for large games
If you're modding a big Unity or Unreal title where the decompiled code is huge, Gemini CLI's 1M context is a real advantage. Claude Code will often need to chunk and re-summarize; Gemini can hold more of the codebase in one go.
Free-Tier Limits to Know
- ~60 requests per minute, ~1,000 requests per day on the free tier.
- A single modding loop can use 50–200 requests (recon, decompile, build, test, video). You can usually finish one mod per day on free tier, or upgrade for heavier use.
- fal.ai asset generation is billed separately by fal — the Gemini CLI free tier doesn't cover image/3D/audio generation.
Limitations
- Gemini CLI occasionally "forgets" a guardrail mid-loop. If it tries to inject into an anti-cheat game, remind it to re-read the safety rules.
- The showcase video cut relies on
ffmpegbeing installed locally — same as any agent. - For the smoothest first run, pick a game with an existing playbook (Terraria, Stardew, AoE2, Minecraft).
