What Is Universal Modder?

Universal Modder (the universal-modder project by rehan-remade, released on GitHub on September 30, 2026 under the MIT license) is not a mod itself. It is a standardized skill pack and command-line toolkit that you install into your AI coding agent. Point the agent at any game you own, and Universal Modder gives it the playbooks, reverse-engineering tools, asset-generation hooks and safety guardrails needed to build a working mod end-to-end.

Within days of launch it crossed 2,000 GitHub stars and is now past 3,400 — a signal that the "AI agent as game modder" workflow has crossed from demo to practical tooling. Example mods already shipped include a tactical nuke for Terraria, a brand-new civilization for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, and a passthrough mod that renders Minecraft inside GTA V story mode.

Why it matters Before Universal Modder, modding a PC game required weeks of reverse engineering, engine-specific knowledge, custom art pipelines and manual testing. Universal Modder compresses that into a single prompt loop the AI agent runs itself.

How the Universal Modder Loop Works

Every mod follows the same ten-step loop. The agent starts by reading prior field notes from the shared knowledge base, then executes recon, builds, generates assets, tests in-game, and writes its own notes back so the next agent starts ahead.

Recon & Pick a Route

Scans Steam, Epic and Xbox installs, fingerprints the engine and version, detects .NET vs native binaries and anti-cheat, then ranks the best modding route. Writes a MODDING_PLAN.md.

Reverse-Engineer the Real Code

Uses ILSpy, Cpp2IL, Vineflower, Ghidra, IDA, Cheat Engine, Frida and RenderDoc over MCP to read actual game code and prove file formats with a round-trip test.

Build One Working Slice

Reads the decompiled code, writes the mod against the correct loader (BepInEx, Harmony, UE4SS, Fabric, tModLoader, ScriptHookV, Genie…), and compiles a minimal first version.

Generate Art, 3D & Audio

Calls fal.ai for sprites with real transparency, pixel art, seamless textures, PBR maps, image-to-3D models, auto-rigging, SFX, music and voice. Without a fal key, it falls back to a local ComfyUI server.

Test in the Running Game

Launches the game, takes GPU-safe screenshots, drives input that only reaches the game window, captures game-only audio, and verifies the mod actually works in context.

Cut the Showcase Video

Uses ffmpeg over an EDL to assemble a titled, beat-cut showcase video of the mod — so you have shareable proof it works.

Package & Write Field Notes

Packages the mod for its platform, then writes a field note — exact versions, route taken, gotchas, verification results — and opens a PR to the shared knowledge base so future agents start ahead.

What's Inside the Toolkit

🔍

Recon That Finds the Route

Auto-scans Steam, Epic and Xbox library folders, fingerprints engine and version, detects .NET vs native, flags anti-cheat, and ranks the safest modding path.

🛠

Reverse Engineering Built In

ILSpy, Cpp2IL, Vineflower, Ghidra, IDA, Cheat Engine, Frida and RenderDoc all available over MCP. File formats are proven with round-trip tests.

🎨

Art, 3D & Audio on Demand

Sprites, pixel art, seamless textures, PBR maps, image-to-3D, auto-rigging, SFX, music, voice and cutscene video — all generated through fal or local ComfyUI.

🎮

Engine-Exact Asset Pipeline

Cutout, nearest-neighbour fit, palettes, sprite sheets, team-colour masks, and 3D-to-8/16-heading renders matched to each game's camera.

✅

In-Game Verification

GPU-safe screenshots, window-isolated input, game-only audio capture. The agent doesn't assume the mod works — it proves it in the running game.

📚

A Knowledge Base AIs Write for AIs

Field notes record exact versions, routes, gotchas and verification. Every agent can open a PR so the next one doesn't rediscover the same traps.

Which AI Agents Does Universal Modder Support?

Universal Modder is agent-agnostic — anything that can read an AGENTS.md file or a plugin marketplace can run it. The officially supported agents are:

🟣

Claude Code

Install via the plugin marketplace with skills and the fal MCP. The most battle-tested agent for the full loop.

🔵

OpenAI Codex

Add the plugin marketplace and run codex plugin add. Strong for code-heavy mods.

🟢

Gemini CLI

Google's open-source terminal agent. 1M-token context makes it well suited to large codebases.

🟡

Cursor

Reads the bundled AGENTS.md and MCP config. Popular for users who prefer a GUI editor.

⚪

GitHub Copilot

Install via "Chat: Install Plugin From Source". Good for existing Copilot subscribers.

⚫

OpenCode

Clone the repo and run with skills and fal MCP ready. Open-source terminal alternative.

Supported Game Engines

Universal Modder ships with 12 engine playbooks. Each playbook tells the agent which loader to use, where saves live, what the asset pipeline looks like, and which reverse-engineering tools to reach for:

  • Unity & Unreal — BepInEx, Harmony and UE4SS routes
  • .NET / XNA — Terraria, Stardew Valley, Celeste via ILSpy and tModLoader
  • Godot & Source — Godot, Source 1/2 and Bethesda engine playbooks
  • Minecraft & Age of Empires II — Fabric modding, Genie engine, retro decompilation

More engine playbooks (Godot, Source 2, RE Engine and indie engines) are actively being documented as field notes in the repository.

Safety & Guardrails

Universal Modder refuses the routes that break the rules or wreck your saves. These guardrails are part of every skill, so the agent can't accidentally drift into abuse territory:

  • Any game you own — single-player, multiplayer on your own servers, offline play.
  • No anti-cheat bypass — refuses to inject into online games with anti-cheat or to cheat other players.
  • No game files shipped — mods ship as code, your own assets, patches or converters. um publish check blocks game files, decompiled dumps and leaked keys.
  • Backs up saves first — snapshots, diffs and restores save folders before touching them.
  • Asks before acting — driving input, installing loaders and publishing all require a yes from you.
System requirements Python 3.10+, ffmpeg, and uv (recommended). Blender is needed for 3D-to-sprite renders. Windows games are driven natively or from WSL. A fal API key is optional — without one, um comfy drives a local ComfyUI server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Universal Modder free?

Yes. The project is MIT-licensed and free to use. You only pay for any fal.ai API credits you consume, or run everything locally through ComfyUI and your own agent subscription.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. That's the point. You describe the mod you want in plain language ("add a tactical nuke to Terraria") and the agent handles code, art, testing and packaging.

Can it mod multiplayer games?

Only games you own and servers you host. It refuses to inject into online games with anti-cheat systems or to cheat other players.

Does it ship decompiled game code?

Never. Mods ship as code, your own assets, patches or converters. The publish check blocks game files, decompiled dumps and leaked keys.

What's the difference between Universal Mod and Universal Modder?

A "universal mod" is a catch-all term for any mod designed to work across many games or versions. Universal Modder is the specific open-source AI framework that builds such mods for you. Read more on our Universal Mod vs Universal Modder page.
